The Works of Famous Photographer Walker Evans on Display for First Friday in South Bethlehem

Photography enthusiasts will find a captivating collection of original depression era Walker Evans photographs on display at TIMEZONES Global Goodies & Framing Gallery at 322 East Third Street in south Bethlehem. The Evans show opens on Friday, September 5, 2008, from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. The exhibit will be on display throughout the month of September.

Exhibition curators John Hill and Sven Martson are noted photographers who worked with Walker Evans. Evans has been regarded as one of America’s greatest photographers. His work, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, 1936, is perhaps one of his most famous photos. The SBHS has selected this “New Deal” photographer to feature for a month-long celebration in south Bethlehem.

On September 25, 2008, noted Evans scholar Rodger Kingston will be available at TIMEZONES to discuss Walker Evans from 7:30 p.m. until 9 p.m. The gallery is generally open Tuesdays through Fridays from10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. There are books, posters, prints and photographs for sale in the gallery.

This photography exhibit is sponsored by South Bethlehem Historical Society, the Delaware and Lehigh National Heritage Corridor, and the Bethlehem Fine Arts Commission.

The day will be spent touring the sites where Walker Evans made the 24 photographs of the Lehigh Valley that can be found in The Library of Congress FSA-OWI collection http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/fsahtml. Stops are scheduled, but not limited to the Northampton Street Bridge in Easton, St. Michael’s Cemetery in Bethlehem and the Time Zones Gallery on East Third Street across from the former Bethlehem Steel plant where the exquisite Evans’ prints made by John T. Hill and Sven Martson will be exhibited.

Running commentary will be provided by Rodger Kingston, Evans scholar and author of Walker Evans in Print: an Illustrated Bibliography. A laser printed catalogue of the Evans’ photographs and related resource material will be provided as well as a box lunch. The estimated cost is $50-60 per person which will be confirmed when the level of interest is determined. The trolley will be departing from the Route 33 Park and Ride at Wm. Penn Highway. Those traveling from NYC can catch the 9:00 am Transbridge bus arriving at the Park and Ride at 10:50.
