SBHS in the Community
A Colorful Blueberry Festival
SBHS president Dana Grubb and treasurer Stacy Milo (seated
left) staffed a table in the Blueberry Festival’s partners’ tent on
July 16. The annual event was held on the grounds of the Burnside
Plantation in Bethlehem. Those who visited were able to
view a portion of the Society’s historic postcard exhibit and receive
a free copy of a past issue of the newsletter, Southern
Exposure. Youngsters created their own historic postcards using
crayons and colored pencils donated by Crayola.
Spike TV views St. Michael’s
On July 18 SBHS board member Ken Raniere (second from
the left) was interviewed in St. Michael’s Cemetery by a film
crew shooting a sizzle reel for Spike TV. Raniere spoke about
the cemetery’s history and connection to Bethlehem Steel as
the final resting place for many steelworkers. The film crew,
James Heidenry (right, filming), John DeVore (back to camera)
and Chuck Thompson were working on a show about American American
monuments, like the former Bethlehem Steel plant.

Commemoration of the Civil War

Summary of Events 2011-2012
Historic Bethlehem Partnership, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, has teamed with local community
organizations to provide programs to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the American
Civil War. The following list briefly describes events and programs scheduled through

additional programs added. Information concerning all programs will be posted at

February 19-21, 2012 - NORTHAMPTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE
Theatrical Performance
“The Civil War” — Music by Frank Wildhorn, book and lyrics
by Frank Wildhron, Gregory Boyd and Jack Murphy. Drawing on letters, diaries, firsthand
accounts, and the words of Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass and Walt Whitman, The
Civil War is a “dramatic theatrical concert” that covers the enormous emotional landscape
of the most difficult test our nation has ever endured. This epic thematic review, reminiscent
of Ken Burns’ acclaimed documentary, puts a human face on the greatest tragedy of American
History, exploring not only the experiences of the soldiers and leaders who fought for
their way of life and the lovers and families they left behind, but also the hopes and
fears of the slaves whose freedom was at stake. It passionately asks us to consider
our belief about freedom, honor and faith. For more information, call NCC at 610-861-5524
during the month prior.

Bookmarks
With Church History

On July 13, 2008, a number of parishes closed within the five-county Allentown
Diocese—four churches out of seven closed in South Bethlehem.
A century ago, parishioners
of diverse ethnic backgrounds built these churches; today, surviving descendants
suffer the loss of their home parishes. Sometime in the forthcoming year, SBHS plans
a publication on the churches of South Bethlehem—a work-in-progress begun since
the summer of 2008.
The bookmarks, designed by Ken Raniere, depict the altar with interior elements
at the bottom; the church facade and a brief history is on the back.
The set
of four retails for $3.50.
Proceeds benefit SBHS.
